Licensing in Ohio

What the compact means here

Ohio is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). A registered nurse or LPN/LVN whose primary state of residence is a compact state can hold one multistate license and practice in Ohio without applying again. You still follow the nurse practice act of Ohio, the state where the patient is.

If you are joining from another state

  1. Confirm that your home state is a compact state and that your license is multistate. Check the status on the license verification at Nursys or with your board.
  2. If you live in another compact state, you can start work in Ohio on your multistate license. Your recruiter confirms the facility requirements before you accept.
  3. If you move your primary state of residence to Ohio, you apply for a Ohio license as your new home state. Ask the Ohio board how long you may keep practicing on the old license while it processes.
  4. If your home state is not in the compact, apply for a Ohio license by endorsement. Start before you accept a start date, because verification and background checks take time.

Other healthcare professions

Allied health, pharmacy, therapy, laboratory and imaging licenses and certifications are issued state by state and are not covered by the nurse compact. Some states accept national certification, others require their own license. Ask your recruiter which credential Ohio requires for your role before you commit to dates.

Compact status changes as states implement the law. This reflects our records as of October 15, 2026. Confirm eligibility with the Ohio board of nursing or at nursecompact.org before you accept a role. Nurse Licensure Compact guide · Compact license map · Our agency licenses

Taxes and take-home pay in Ohio

Ohio taxes wage income, and rates and rules change, so use the current rate from your state tax agency. Federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare apply on top. If you work here on a travel assignment, your tax home decides whether housing and meals stipends are tax-free, and that is a question for your tax professional. Put your own rates into the take-home pay calculator and the travel nurse pay calculator.
