How to use the map
- Find your home state, the state where you legally live. If it is green and you hold a multistate license from it, you can work in the other green states.
- Find the state you want to work in. Green: no new license for an eligible nurse. Yellow: enacted but not yet working, so treat it like a non-compact state until the board says otherwise. Grey: apply by endorsement.
- Open the state page for the steps and the board you will deal with. Confirm everything with the board before you accept a start date.
What the compact does not cover
- Which professions. The Nurse Licensure Compact covers registered nurses and licensed practical or vocational nurses. Other professions are licensed state by state. Advanced practice roles are handled separately, so ask the board.
- Where you live. The multistate license comes from your primary state of residence. If you move, you apply for a license in the new home state.
- The rules of the state you work in. You follow the nurse practice act of the state where the patient is.
- Employer requirements. Facilities may ask for their own certifications, background checks and credentialing even when your license is valid.

What does a yellow state mean?
It enacted the compact but has not fully implemented it, so a multistate license is not yet recognized the way it is in a green state. Ask the board for the current rule.
